Top Things to know about Rome
When to visit?: November till March is the best time to avoid the crowds, and it doesn't get too cold.

Spring is the most pleasant time to visit Rome.
​
The Summer months, from June till August, can get very crowded, and it's usually very hot.
In Autumn, it is humid and rainy.
Language: Italian is the main language in Rome, but most people living in Rome speak English.
Still, it never hurts to learn just a few words in the language of the country you are visiting. Your trying will always be appreciated by the locals!
Currency: Italy uses the Euro. Credit Cards are widely accepted all over Rome, but having a little cash always comes in handy when buying things from smaller shops.

How to get around?: Rome has a very efficient public transport system, but you have to be prepared to walk a bit to the top sites. A single ticket for the subway system, valid for 15 min, will cost about €1.50.

Buy a Roma Pass, with free skip the line admission to 1 or 2 attractions and free use of the city's public transport system.
Depending on which Roma Pass you buy, it is valid for 48 or 72 hours.
It can be picked up at Terminal 3 of the Fiumicino, Leonardo da Vinci Airport at the tourist information point.
A 48-hour ticket will cost you around €32.
Safety: Rome is a very safe city to visit. Just take the usual precautions when traveling to any big city and be aware of your surroundings. Pick-pockets are common.

It is safe to drink tap water and the water from the water fountains all over the city.
How to get from the Airport to the City Center?
The fastest and cheapest way to get from Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport to the city center is to take the Leonardo Express train to Termini Station.
This will take about 35 min, and the ticket costs about €17.90 per Person.

Once at Termini Station, you can connect to both metro lines A and B.
​
A taxi will cost about 50-60 € depending on where you are staying in the city, and it can take over an hour.
How to spend 3 Days in Rome
Day#1: Walk around the City.....

The staircase, with it's 135 steps, is a favorite spot among tourists to sit, relax and enjoy the views of Piazza di Spagna, one of the most visited squares in Rome.

To get here, take the Metro Line A and get out at the Spagna Station.

It can get very crowded in the evening!
.....and the Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain is the largest and most beautiful fountain in Rome. It is about 20 meters wide and about 26 meters high.
​
Have you ever been told to throw a coin into the fountain?
Well, the myth says that if you throw one coin into the fountain, you will return to Rome,
if you throw in two coins, you will fall in love with an attractive Italian,
and if you throw in three coins, you will marry this Italian.
To achieve this, the coin must be thrown with the right hand over the left shoulder.

It is said that about one million euros in coins is taken from the fountain every year.

The Pantheon is the best preserved building from ancient Rome and has an amazing 9-meter diameter opening at it's top which allows natural light to illuminate the inside of the entire building.

It is free to visit the Pantheon and is open from Monday to Saturday from 8:30a.m till 7:30p.m and from 9a.m till 6p.m on Sundays.

Use the Metro Line A and get off at the Barberini Station.

During the Roman Empire, the Colosseum was used to keep the Roman people entertained with recreations of battles, gladiator fights and executions of prisoners.

....The Vatican City
Located in the heart of Rome, the Vatican City is the smallest state in Europe, ruled by the Pope.

Within the walls of the Vatican you will find the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica.
​
I recommend spending at least half a day at this impressive place. There is a lot to see and be in awe of.
​
The Vatican Museum is open from Monday to Saturday, 9a.m till 6p.m. It is closed on Sundays except for the last Sunday of each month when it is open from 9a.m till 2p.m.
​
Use the Metro Line A and get out at the Cipro-Musei Vaticani stop.

We took the night train from Carinthia, Austria to Rome. A sleeper-cabin for 3 People cost us around €750.

3 Nights in The Place 217 Hotel cost us around €500.

The Roma Pass for 72 hours cost us around €52 per Person.
​
The food and drinks we had in the 3 days we were in Rome cost about €300 for 3 People.
